Infinity Scarves and Cowls

Infinity Scarves and Cowls are all the rage these days! The great thing for knitters is that you don’t have to spend a fortune at a department store to get a gorgeous infinity scarf or cowl.   It’s an easy and fun way to use up stash yarn or indulge in some beautiful new yarn without breaking the bank.

This winter, NYC streets are filled with people who have learned the secret of keeping warm. They are all wrapped up in the big soft folds of the infinity cowl. A long loop that you twist and double around your neck, it’s definitely a glamorous look and brings a little brightness to a pretty horrible winter season. I love when fashion and function meet!

I used Karabella’s Alpaca blend yarn.  It is by far one of the softest, most cuddly yarns, perfect for wearing around sensitive skin areas like your neck. A blend of fine merino wool and alpaca, it has a beautiful weight that creates cascading, dramatic fabrics. Just what I was looking for!

  • 5 skeins of yarn – your choice of color
  • A US #17, 32 inch circular needle
  • A replaceable jumbo marker

The Pattern

Gauge

15 stitches = 4 inches in herringbone stitch

Finished Size

14 inches wide and 58 inches around

Begin

Cast on 220 stitches. To ensure that your first round isn’t too difficult, cast on fairly loosely; your stitches should easily slide up and down the needle.

Join into the Round

Make sure the stitches aren’t twisted around the needle, and slip the last stitch you cast on from the right needle to the left needle (so that it is next to the first stitch cast on).

Place a replaceable jumbo stitch marker on the right needle.

K2tog and slip only the first stitch off the left needle (leaving the second stitch on the needle)…

Continue

Round 1: *K2tog and slip only the first stitch off the left needle, repeat from * until 1 stitch remains.

Remove the stitch marker and k2tog, slipping the first stitch off the left needle. Place the stitch marker to the right of the first stitch on the right needle.

Remove that stitch from the needle and twist it

Round 2: *K2tog through the back loop (K2tog tbl), slipping the first stitch off the left needle, repeat from * to last stitch. Remove the stitch marker and k2tog tbl, slipping the first stitch off the left needle. Place the stitch marker to the right of the first stitch on the right needle.

Remove that stitch from the needle and twist it

Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until piece measures 14 inches from the cast on edge, ending with all the steps of Round 2.

NOTE: You will continue to work the Herringbone Stitch for the bind off.

Bind Off Round: [K2tog and slip only the first stitch off the left needle] 2 times, pass the first stitch over (just like a normal bind off), *k2tog and slip the first stitch off the left needle, pass the first stitch over, repeat from * until 2 stitches remain (1 stitch on the left needle and 1 stitch on the right needle), knit the last stitch tbl and pass the first stitch over. Cut the yarn and pull it through the remaining stitch.

Weave in the ends, gently block and then bundle up!

If this project is too difficult, try this one – cast on 200 stitches, knit every row until the piece measures at least 10” or your desired length from the cast on edge.  Bind off extremely loosely – use a needle 2 sizes larger to bind off!  If you would like to add a ruffle, see the pattern below.

Pattern — Ruffled

Cast on 200 sts. Place a marker and join into round. Knit every round for 3″. Then, work an Increase Round (*k1, knit into front and back of next stitch; repeat from * to end of round). Knit every round for 3″. Work another Increase Round. Knit every round for 3″ more, until piece is approximately 10″ or desired length from cast-on edge.

Binding Off:

You need at least enough yarn to stretch across your top edge 3 times. You need to bind off EXTREMELY LOOSELY.  I can’t stress the loose bind off enough! You cannot bind off too loosely!!  Use a needle 2 sizes larger to bind off.

Note: Keep in mind that these are very long scarves.

The above are available on Ravelry!

Happy Knittng!

I didn’t realize there can be a “recipe” for a knitted item. But then again I don’t knit.

Although someone can make a nice side income from making and selling these scarves.

Bytheway, if this article’s image is what the scarf will look like, it’s beautiful. Looks high end.
